One Hour Wargames

I've done no more of my Oathmark campaign this week as me old back has been a bit sore. I did find some old photos from a game that I forgot to post last May. So here we go...

The toys are my old plastic AWI chaps and the scenario involves the British forcing a river crossing to take a hill on the other side.

The objective is well defended.

But the bridge is taken.

British artillery bombarding from across the creek.

These redcoats are getting shaky, 12 hits out of 15.

The view from the American lines.

Another unit of redcoats are close to breaking, 14 hits.

The Grenadiers are holding on.

And the Brits are defeated, here are the lightbobs falling back to the bridge.

A pleasant way to spend an hour.

"The War Game"

I've been reading Charles Grants The War Game a lot lately so I dug out my very old Airfix American War of Independence soldiers. These were painted in the early 1980's and were re-organised and re-based in 2009 when I bought the book. They make up half size units with some fudging and were done solely to try out the rules. This was the catalyst for my imaginations armies featured in my Pauls Wargames Blog. here

Here come the Redcoats.

Hessian Jagers screen the grenadiers.

Lightbobs from hacked Esci Austrians.

I had to borrow some guns from my imagination collection.

The rebels, Accurate and Airfix.
They deploy in two lines.

The American left flank.

The lines are closing.

American militia.

The lightbobs harass the enemy.

An overview.

American rifles harass the British left flank.

The British fire their first volley and shatter their opponents.

The British Grenadiers get the volley in first, while the Jagers shoot into the American flank.

And a bad morale roll sees the Americans retire from the hill.

Another American battalion is broken.

The battle is lost as the riflemen see off a British battalion.

A good afternoons entertainment.

Commands and Colors Marlborough

I've been playing a lot of Commands and Colors lately, Ancients and Napoleonics but today I dug out some very old 6mm Marlburians and had a couple of games.

I modified the Napoleonic rules a little and these photos show the end of the second battle.

This battle was a long struggle over the fordable river, the Franco-Bavarians had the upperhand from the start.
The French defended the position very well and were very successful with counterattacks.
However the pendulum swung and the Allies slowly gained the advantage.
A very weak Bavarian formation holds the church.
A lot of units removed from the field.
Marlborough led his cavalry reserve forward in a desperate attempt to win the battle and was winning 8-6 when he played this card.
He forced the Bavarian guns to retreat to the high ground and just managed to destroy them with his bonus attack. He won the game 9-6.

What an exciting game!, I was punching the air at the finish.

I don't recall ever having a duff game with Mr. Borgs creations and some of them have been very exciting indeed.

A return to One Hour Wargames.

Although I haven't blogged for some time I have done plenty of wargaming.

In recent weeks I have played Commands and Colors Napoleonics and Ancients, Warhammer Ancient Battles, War and Conquest and a couple of Napoleonic boardgames. Today I fancied yet another change and gave One Hour Wargames a run out....

My imaginations toys came out and a grand time was had.
In this scenario the armies were fighting to control a crossroads and a hill.
 The Eisenburg Musketeers.
The skirmishers are up against it.
 Oh dear!.
A firefight rages up and down the line.

The Heydenbruck Regiment approach the hill.
Having destroyed the skirmishers the Blue Hussars prepare to roll up the flank.
 The line starts to crumble.

The Altstein Musketeers recoil leaving the crossroads.
But the Essling Grenadiers join the rout.
Then the Eisenburg Musketeers get hit in the flank.
The skirmishers flee from the Heydenbruckers.
The game is over by turn eight. It was good fun though and for once I played the rules as written with no tinkering at all!.
So I set up another one to play tomorrow night.
The defended town looks a bit like Toytown.
 I love it!.

 The attackers.
The hill has to be defended too.

It's gonna be good.
