Combat Commander scenario 23 "No-Mans Land" features the British and the Italians fighting in the desert.
The Italians made the first moves by using their mortar to cover the British sniper with smoke and rapidly advanced toward the entrenched British platoon.Despite artillery fire Sgt. Rovena and his platoon reached the British trenches. In the ensuing melee the British lost two sections and Lt. Chatham, this left one section and the sniper on the map. The loss of either would win the game for the Italians.
Even worse radio contact with the artillery support was lost, things looked very grim for the Tommies.
Then, as so often happens in Combat Commander everything changed. The last British section fought off the Italian platoon killing Sgt. Rovena in the process. They then advanced up the road to take two objectives covered by Cpl. Singh in his sniper position.
The Italians sent a squad forward to contest the road and they took an objective under the cover of smoke. But then the smoke was dispersed by a gust of wind and the Italian squad was exposed and routed under very effective fire.
The British were well ahead on VPs now and the time was ticking down. But how to hang on for the win?. The all conquering section were also exposed by the wind blowing their covering smoke away and it was plain that they could not stay out in the open.
But instead of retreating safely back to their trenches my aggressive tendencies surfaced once more. Holding some "ambush" cards in the British hand I attempted to get forward into the Italian trenches.
Mortar fire broke the Brits just yards from cover!.
Corporal Singh did his utmost and managed to pin the Italians down.
But they recovered before the gallant British section could get into cover and accurate mortar fire was just too much for the Tommies to endure. The British reached their surrender point and the game was won by the Italians.
Bloomin' heck!.
Another great scenario, another great game.
