Fighting Sail-the old and the new.

When the esteemed blogger Archduke Piccolo asked me about the SPI Fighting Sail game from back in the day I fancied giving it a go.

It is rather tatty nowadays. A bit like meself.

The rulebook is clear but heavy going for me.

The scenario I played was the USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere. The game was okay but a bit dull for my taste, it was hard to solo due to the secret pre-planned move system.

Here are the old and the new. The Osprey rules are designed for fleet actions as it states on the cover, while the SPI game is geared to smaller actions.

I have been fancying a hex and counter game for a while and as I only have the one it was an easy choice.

It was good fun and filled in a couple of hours.

Jena- Auerstadt
The Prussians are trying to hold off Napoleon while extricating the bulk of the army. Marshall Davout is blocking their escape. It ain't easy!.

Napoleon and the Guard are broken and Davout is under pressure when the game ends.

And the result is a marginal Prussian victory.

On the other side of the map is Eylau but that is for another day.

I must get back to my paper ships!

  1. Hi Paul- The only Board game I've played was the Zulu War - 'Isandalwana'...enjoyable -though I prefer moving Toy Soldiers better. Regards. KEV.

    1. I used to have quite a few boardgames, Squad Leader, Afrika Korps and the like but I ditched them years ago.
Nowadays I mainly stick to the Commands and Colors series.
      Cheers,
      Paul.
