Last year I took up the 1000 miles challenge as an attempt to get fit. I got the idea from Tony of "Tony's Toy Soldiers" fame here and it has been one of the best things I ever did. I don't do it digitally but use a map, a bit of string and a notebook to record my progress.
I managed to get my 1000 miles done with just one week to spare before the year was up. I started last year near the end of August, I know it was an odd time to start but I thought I'd strike while the iron was hot.
I did miss about three months of walking when my mother was taken ill before she died, they were tough times. I also missed nine days due to an infection. So in the end it was a bit of a push to get the miles in, in the heatwave I was up at five in the morning to avoid the heat. There is no avoiding the blinking flies however and a swishy stick is essential.
I walk on both sides of the Northumberland and Durham border and there are some steep hills to make me puff and blow. It is not easy with my atrial fibrillation but my fitness is much improved.
My heart is still out of rhythm but I have spells where it isn't far wrong so I am hopeful that it may flip into sinus permanently. I don't really want a fourth procedure.I have also lost about two and a half stone and I'm actually lighter now than when I got married in 1989.I don't usually blog about non-wargames stuff but it is a milestone for me.
Well, my new walking year begins tomorrow, I can't wait!.
A great achievement. You get to see the beautiful countryside here in the north east as an added bonus
ReplyDeleteThanks Neil, I see lots of wildlife too. There seems to be more wildlife than ever just now, loads of deer, various raptors, foxes and stoats. I love it.
DeleteCongratulations ! , well done - I'm not saying walking is the cure for all ills but it does help with a lot, both mentally and physically - good for you !
ReplyDeleteCheers Tony, you were the main inspiration for my walking. Well, you and an 80 year old neighbour who walks 8 miles a day!.
DeleteGood on you Paul- 1,000 Miles is a fair old distance for sure- well done!
ReplyDeleteThank you KEV, it is very enjoyable and has made a big difference to me. I reckon I'm as fit now as I was when I was working.
DeleteOOPS! I may have accidentally posted on the wrong post! SO just in case: Congratulations! That's no small accomplishment. Good luck in your upcoming year of walking! (if i didn't, feel free to delete this!)
ReplyDeleteCheers John, the walking's done me a lot of good.
DeleteCongratulations, Paul! More than 3 miles a day is a pretty fair blow-out for the old corpus delicti...! (Now if I could just...)
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Ion
